Valentine’s Day is coming up! Who’s excited? Normally, I’m not into the Hallmark Holidays, but I understand the desire to have some fun when you have the opportunity, so I won’t lecture anyone on how you should love your S.O. every day. Instead, let’s focus on the fact that you’ll probably get some nookie. Without further ado, here are some V-Day Dos and Don’ts.

DO Share a Meal with Your Loved One; DON’T Get Gassy Afterward
Breaking Bread is one of the most special things we humans can share. You could go out for a nice dinner, splurge on the bottle of wine, and order the chocolate dessert, or you could check out Fork Me, Spoon Me by Amy Reilly and cook for an extra-special V-Day. Trust her, she’s an expert. And a cheap one at $13.95. Go Ahead, Eat Something Sexy! forkmespoonme.com

Just in case the culinary cabaret gives your digestive system more than you bargained for, wear a Subtle Butt: disposable gas neutralizer. It will save you from embarrassment- just in case. Smelly gas might ruin the mood. I’m just sayin’.$9.95 at subtlebutt.com

DON’T Wear Panties; DO Wear (under)Garment Guard
Drive your lover crazy by letting him know that you aren’t wearing any underwear. Still, you don’t have to be totally naughty. Keep the protection with (under)garment guard, 100% cotton disposable adhesive underwear that sticks to your trousers and creates a layer of protection between you and them without causing VPL or whale tale. You know, just sayin’.

DON’T Be Typical; DO Use your Imagination
Maybe it’s just me, but roses, diamonds, and teddy bears are completely overrated. Instead, rent a great horror movie (you can cuddle on the couch when you get scared) and… OK, it’s just me.

With vast differences in arrival and destination temperatures, confusing and costly excess baggage charges, and general pain-in-the-butt factors in the TSA screening lines, choosing what to wear to the airport this winter will get a trip off on the right- or wrong- foot. These tips and guidelines should help travelers be more comfortable, prevent excess baggage fees, and keep everyone moving quickly through security checks.

Consider the difference in temperature of your destination. If going to a warm place, can you avoid taking your overcoat and accompanying scarves, gloves, boots? Consider leaving them at home, or in the car at the airport, and instead layering up. You can always ditch a layer into your checked or carry-on bag when you get to the airport, if you left room. Plus, when you arrive, you can remove another layer and be comfortable from the time you exit the plane.

If you are going to a cold place, instead of packing them, wear your coat and hat, scarves, gloves, boots. It can slow you down a little in the TSA screening, but it can save you some excess baggage fees. Just use the pockets of the coat to hold the accessories to help speed your progress through the security check. Plus, airplanes are so cold this time of the year, so your jacket can double as a blanket in case the cost-cutting airlines do not provide any on your flight.

A great travel trick is to use a pashmina or similar wrap as a blanket, scarf and jacket throughout your trip, unless you are a straight male, in which case a Mexican serape (poncho) could work, albeit a bit bulky.

Select items carefully knowing you might have to remove them for security checks. Boots that take a personal assistant to get on or off are a bad option to wear to the airport, especially when you remember your limbs tend to swell when traveling. Lots of jewelry and accessories can also slow you (and the rest of the line) down, and you run the risk of losing some of it in the removal/replacement process. Men might want to consider some sort of murse/man bag/computer bag that can safely carry all of the items you normally try and stash in your pockets: phone, change, wallet, sandwiches, etc. Then you can have all of your items for the cabin in one easy-to-access place. And, for your mother’s sake, make sure your socks are hole-free!

Protect your clothes and your image with underarm sweat guards. Inside, outside, hot, cold, jetways, runways. All those temperature changes mean that you are going to get a little sweaty from time to time. Nobody likes being the smelly person on the plane (and no one wants to sit next to the smelly person on the plane), and nobody likes hauling around dirty clothes. Try this trick: apply disposable underarm shields to clothing before you leave home. Know that even when you are struggling to get your carry-on into the overhead bins that you will not be flashing sweat stains to your seatmates. When you finally get to your destination, you can remove and toss the used pads, and maybe, if turbulence did not cause your beverage to spill onto your shirt, you can wear it again, having saved valuable space in your baggage. (Garment Guard disposable underarm shields, 5 pairs for $10.95 at solutionsthatstick.com

Sanchez and Favre may have both lost their Championships (and my dream of youngest-oldest Super Bowl XLIV is over!), but I’m not going to wallow in junk food over it. I’m going to wallow with health food.

Yes, it’s true: you can have a great Super Bowl party, eat plenty of snacks, and still keep your New Year’s Resolution of eating healthier foods. There are some “better” choices to make among traditional party foods as well as some new things to add to the spread

-Choose Tortilla Chips & Fresh Salsa instead of Potato Chips & Dip

Salsa is fat-free and full of veggies; dip is fatty and full of MSG. Don’t believe me? Read the labels and you’ll be surprised how many “trusted brands” add monosodium glutamate, which is proven to increase weight gain and contribute to a whole host of other health problems.

PS: Making your own salsa is even healthier than buying it at the store. It will have the vitamins of fresh veggies, no preservatives, and you can make it as simple or spicy as you want.

PPS: Spicy foods increase metabolism, so you can feel slightly less guilty about the beer you are consuming.

-Have a Veggie Plate & Put Vinaigrette, Not Ranch, in the Middle

Personally, I eat naked veggies, but if you need to make them a little more interesting, you can make your own simple vinaigrette by starting with a half cup of balsamic vinegar and adding individual dollops of Dijon mustard. Whisk together (with other flavors, if you wish) until the consistency and quantity are correct.

If you’re not into vinaigrettes, you can make a simple yogurt dip by mixing minced garlic, shallots, dill, and grated cucumbers into plain yogurt; just make sure the yogurt has only two ingredients: milk and cultures. Why add cornstarch and stabilizers and preservatives? Oh my!

-Bake Brownies (Really)

Now, normally I am not an advocate of foods in disguise. Take tofu “chicken” nuggets: everybody can tell it’s not chicken. And I am also by no means a vegan, but I do love this recipe for Low Fat Vegan Black Bean Brownies. Try them and you’ll see that they’re just delicious chocolatey squares. Nobody cares that there are no eggs or wheat because they are just fudgey and delicious! I would bake a big batch if I were you.

Now, in light of the bean brownies, spicy salsa and beer, you will probably want to wear Subtle Butt: disposable gas neutralizers. Just in Case. $9.95 for 5 at www.subtlebutt.com

You men normally start off your day with clean clothes. By the end, not so much. Here is our list of common “man marks” and how to rid your life of them:

1. Getting Ready: Deodorant Skids
Skid-what? No, they are those white marks that get on your clothing when you put your shirt on. Some people say they use a pair of nylons to get this out of clothes, but I don’t believe them. And who really carries nylons around with them? Skid Out is much more practical. Skid Out: deodorant, drip & drool erasers remove deodorant skids (and dried toothpaste drips, makeup powder smudges from hugging, and dried baby drool) without the need for water or chemicals. The special texture of the sponge just rubs that dried-on stuff right out without a hassle and they’re reusable until their texture breaks down. 2-sponge packs, perfect for throwing in your gym bag or desk drawer, are $4.95 at www.solutionsthatstick.com.

2. Being Active: Grass Stains
My brother and I fully utilized our huge backyard, which became the bane of my mother’s existence. My mom’s favorite product is Shout; not just for grass stains, but almost everything else, too. Just spray the stain, rub in the Shout, let sit for about 10 or 15 minutes, and wash in cold water. Don’t put it in the dryer until you know the stain is completely gone. Real Simple Magazine says that if the stain doesn’t disappear completely, you can use an eyedropper to apply a 1-part ammonia (or white vinegar) mixed with 2-parts water solution to bleach any remaining stain. Prices vary, but both products can be purchased at major chain stores.

3. Mingling with the Finer Sex: Makeup & Lipstick

a. Hugging the Ladies: Makeup
As mentioned above, Skid Out’s special texture will remove makeup smudges without moisture or chemical treatment. My boyfriend has learned to keep Skid Out in his glove box just in case I don’t have any in my purse or if he sees deodorant skids at the last minute.

b. Kissing the Ladies: Lipstick
Since we ladies haven’t figured out how to kiss ourselves, I must admit I don’t have any experience with this stain. But the experts at ehow.com recommend rubbing alcohol, then dishwashing detergent (Dawn is great for greasy stains like this and donates $1 per bottle sold to save wildlife), then a stain stick.

4. It’s all about Prevention
There are some stains that are impossible to remove. For example, yellow armpit stains and ring-around-the-collar are a chemical reaction between your sweat and your fabric (and your antiperspirant in the case of yellow armpits, which is why they’re so difficult to deal with). It’s best to simply prevent ring-around-the-collar with White Collar Grime: disposable collar protectors, which also make great tag tamers and itchy-embroidery-back-smoothers. White Collar Grime comes in a 10-foot by 1-1/2” roll so you can customize the size for your needs. It’s $9.95 at www.solutionsthatstick.com. For sweat stains, Garment Guard: disposable underarm shields are all you need. Men might want to try the Grands size, which is $14.95 for 5 pairs at www.garmentguard.com.

I hope this made your life a little bit easier!

You started off the new year with resolutions for better health, but you
have now found that your daily run interferes with your coffee run, your
healthy eating has created some healthy odors, and you miss your smoking
buddies. Fear not! Solutions exist to keep you on track with your goals for
the year without compromising your regular routine.

1) Storing your money on the go with Pocksie. Rectangle-boob is not an
option, and the barista looks at you with disgust when you hand over sweaty
bills you have just pulled out of your bra, shoe, or ??? Keep on good terms
with your local coffee shop/bakery/mini mart by using Pocksie: temporary
sticky pockets. Just peel off and stick to the inside of your shirt or
shorts and create an instant pocket just big enough to hold ID, credit card,
some notes, and a key. 6 pockets are $9.95 at www.pocksie.com

2) Neutralizing the odor caused by your healthy eating with Subtle Butt. Is
your newfound vegetarianism creating a newfound noxious odor around your
derriere? While your body adjusts to its new stream of raw veggies, stick a
Subtle Butt disposable gas neutralizer in your underwear. Each 3.25” square
absorbs and neutralizes foul odors so you can keep you your healthy eating
and keep your friends, too. “And they really work,” says Annie Beiner,
Sales Director for the company. “I’m not just an employee, but a satisfied
customer!” 5 saving graces are $11.95 at www.subtlebutt.com

3) Quitting (or starting) smoking with Blu electric cigarettes.
Smoking can be very social and a good networking tool. Quitting means
losing relationships you have built over a series of seven-minute sessions.
And starting smoking just to gain those relationships is hazardous to your
health and pocketbook. Thanks to Blu electric cigarettes, you can have that
social connection, breaks from the daily grind, and no unhealthy effects.
They are cheaper, tobacco-free, and come in tasty flavors with no nicotine
or small levels of it, if you are interested in weaning off the real stuff.
Jesse Chou of Laguna Beach loves the sensation of having a cigarette in his
fingers. “I enjoy my time slipping out to the patio for a smoke, but there
is a real wow factor among friends and co-workers when I pull this out at
the table after a meal and have a few puffs without offending anyone.” A
rechargeable starter pack is $59.95 at www.blucigs.com

So why try and change your routine when these few little gizmos will make
staying healthy so much easier? Cheers to a great 2010!

One of your New Year’s Resolutions may have been to make it to the gym more often, but how many times have you put it off because you didn’t have the right gear? How many times have you brought a T-shirt and not running shorts, or had to wash your hair with shower gel? Luckily, when you go more often and get into the routine of making sure your gym bag is packed, you get more comfortable and everything gets easier (that’s my theory, anyway). So without further ado, here is our list of gym bag essentials:

1. Shoes & 2. Socks (duh)
Obviously, you need to wear shoes and socks to the gym. The Shoe Dog at RoadRunner Sports will help you find the best shoes for your workout needs. (I love my NewBalance 920s!)

3. Clothes
I won’t even bother you with my own choice of clothing. You can find gym shorts and T-shirts and sweats everywhere you look. But, just as a word to the wise, I have discovered the best sports bra ever, the tata tamer from lululemon & also wear (under)Garment Guard as underwear under my yoga pants.

4. Water
Nalgene bottles are super-durable, and now available in BPA-free Tritan, which withstands temperatures from -40F to 212F without imparting any flavor or leaching chemicals into your water. You can open the OTG style bottle with one hand, so it’s the perfect reusable water bottle for on-the-go hydration. $11.99 for an indestructible bottle that will last a lifetime!

5. A Gym Towel
I use a plain old white kitchen towel because I can bleach it, although I like this Casabella Stay-Put Gym Towel, which has a hook for hanging and a pocket for a phone or mp3 player for $19.99 at Organize-It.com

6. Deodorant, Not Antiperspirant!
Sweat happens. Your body needs it. But you don’t have to stink. Here are 2 deodorants that actually work:

Old Spice Deodorant
Old Spice makes both Antiperspirant-Deodorant and just plain Deodorant. It’s best to make sure you’re buying just deodorant so that your body can sweat to rid itself of toxins and extra water. A 3.25 oz stick is $2.99 at drugstore.com.

Alba Botanica Deodorant
It’s a little more pricey, but it lasts forever and is free of nasty chemical additives. I personally love the Lavender Scent, which has tea tree oil, baking soda, and antibacterial alpine lichen, so it’s not just covering up stinky sweat, but actually neutralizing the cause of the odor. Available for $6.95 at albabotanica.com

7. Paper Shampoo, 8. Paper Body Wash & 9. Paper Soap
OK, you can bring your bottle of liquid shampoo if you really want to, but this takes up a lot less space. It’s also great for travel, and is just kind of nifty.
$4.95 for 30 sheets at wishingfish.com

10. Garment Guard: disposable underarm shields
Sure, everyone sweats at the gym, and you might not mind while you’re actually working out. But after you take your shower and put on fresh clothes, your body will still be sweating even though you and your mind are moving on to other things. With these, you won’t have to worry about sweat marks on post-gym clothing. Just move right along with your day. 5 pairs are available for $10.95 at www.solutionsthatstick.com. Bulk packs are also available.

Good Luck with the New Year’s workout plan

In my search for a great white elephant gift other than Subtle Butt, I’ve run across the following items, so without further ado, here is our White Elephant Gift Guide.

In other news, we heard a rumor that Garment Guard is scheduled to be on The View on Friday- watch out for it! Our BFF Jenn Falik introduced the product to the ladies, and last time it was on, it was a big hit. We hope they like it this time, too!

I’ve been off the stuff (coffee) for almost two months, but over the last few days I’ve had at least five coffee drinks. I had to get energy for a moving party, then I had to compare Peet’s gingerbread lattes to Starbucks gingerbread lattes, then I stayed up late and needed to wake up the next morning… and afternoon. And then I was a coffee-drinker-in-denial again.

At this point, the holidays are keeping me busy at work and at home, and the lack of sleep is soon to become a regular occurence. So should I just be resigned to my fate and keep drinking this elixir of life? Originally, I was determined to not gain any weight over this holiday season, but it’s going to be difficult if I can’t keep the sugary latte cravings at bay.

In related news, I’ve been an adamant opponent of wearing shapewear ever since my mom let me dress myself for fancy parties. Ever since then, I’ve felt that if you were fat, you should just be fat and not try to fake looking thinner for formal events. Stand up straight, suck it in and that’s the end. As skinny as you actually get without shoving lumpy bumpies into some unnatural fabric construction.

But today, I’m ready to change my mind. I have stumbled across the best-yet invention in shapewear, Yummie Tummie. I watched the video, and I’m ready to convert. This Heather Thomson lady is genius! Her Yummie Tummie thing is amazing! It’s cute! It’s not something you have to stuff yourself into and hide under your clothes, but rather a layering piece; a wardrobe staple instead of something from the dreaded “foundations” department (ick)

I actually can’t wait to try it. But alas, I won’t have to save it for a special occasion! I can wear it anytime I want! Because it will be adorable! Victory!

…then after the holidays, I can quit coffee
